The sea! The sea!

I love the sea.

I was born within sight of the sea and it has always held a fascination for me. I feel like I belong near the sea. Sadly, I now live some way from the coast so visits to the sea are a real treat. Yesterday the sun was blazing, hardly any wind and really warm so we packed lunch and headed over to Staithes, a small fishing village on the North Yorkshire coast.

We planned to do a circular walk of about four miles that took in a stunning cliff top walk and then inland through a little wood and some other villages before returning to Staithes.

Staithes is a beautiful, higgeldy-piggedly little place, packed with fisherman's cottages that are squeezed into a tiny space like sardines. It was also the home of Captain Cook, who was famous for his sea voyages in the 18th century.

There is a very steep walk down into the village....

This is the Captain Cook museum.....

Down to the main street...

And then a steep climb up to the cliffs to begin our walk.

 Into the woods...

And back to the cliff tops overlooking Staithes harbour...

You can see from this height how full of cottages this little place is...

Back down the hill (check out that fab turquoise house!)....

Being a Friday, there were hardly any other people on the walk and we felt like we had the cliff tops to ourselves. Things were buzzing and fluttering and bleating and it was just fabulous. I love the sea.

A big thank you to all of you who visited and left such lovely comments and welcome to new followers (I have 100 now...yay!!!!).

Enjoy your weekend! xxx

  14. What a wonderful day - I was born in a land locked country but am still drawn to the sea - it must be a primitive thing! Envy envy envy! Don't find there is a special clear light that only seems to be at the coast - lovely pictures.

  19. Hi Andrea, not sure by which route I found your blog but I'm really glad I did. I went on a school holiday to Staithes when I was 12 and fell in love with the place. Not sure what it was about Staithes but it certainly got in to my heart and has been there since. Unfortunately I haven't been back. We stayed in a hostel on top of the cliff, overlooking the village. The ladies of Staithes used to make and probably wore a particular type of bonnet. I remember wanting to buy one but not having quite enough money. Anyway, we had a lovely time.

Thank you so much for sharing your photos and bringing back some wonderful memories.

    Have a lovely day.

  21. gorgeous photos, we go to Staithes every year and I love it, can't wait to go again, and do that walk, we usually do along the beach at low tide to Port Mulgrave, up the cliffs and then back along the clifftops, but your wooded walk sounds lovely

  24. Hi Andrea!
Thanks for your lovely comments on my last few posts!
Yes, large gardens are a mixed blessing I think - ours here is only small, but bigger than our last one and just about big enough to contain a greenhouse (never had one before and was dying for one!)a veg patch, compost area, bonfire area, various sheds, a terrace, fishpond and lawn. I am really hoping to squeeze in chickens but not sure theres room!
But as its small its all manageable.
Would have loved a larger garden but as you say you then start to get mainentance problems and you can spend all your time battling with boring perennial weeds etc rather than the more enjoyable aspects.
We have a holiday home with a large garden and all we ever do is cut the grass which takes forever, then cut back shrubs and brambles and its enough to make you HATE gardening as its all hard work and chores! We never have the time for the nice stuff there.
So I do sympathise, and I hope you can get beyond the weeds maintanace and enjoy your garden again.
