A quilt for Baby J

Hello my dear ladies

I hope this weekend finds you happy and well and (if you are in the Northern hemisphere) enjoying some autumn sunshine.

We have a winner for the giveaway - chosen by the random number generator known as Little S - Sarah at All Fingers and Thumbs! Congratulations Sarah and sorry to the rest of you lovely people who entered the giveaway. I wish I had gifts for you all!

Now onto some crafting......oh yes, I have a finished project........ready?

The patches were sewn together by machine but the quilting was done by hand...my first ever quilt!

I have to say that I was not prepared for how much I loved the actual quiling process...I am totally in love with quilting! This may have something to do with my fear of the sewing machine! I love how the whole thing is transformed into something cosy and comfy and, well, sort of quilty, just by adding these little stitches. It was all done freehand so you would be hard pushed to find a straight line here (!) but I think it has character!

This is the back. I cheated and made the back much bigger than the front and then sort of brought it round....if that makes sense....

My neighbour, who is a very experienced quilter, told me that I should have used a frame and then I wouldn't have got this puffed up effect....well I LOVE the puffed up effect! Isn't that what quilts are supposed to do, puff up????

And here it is in all its glory...my first quilt and hopefully the first of many. Many of you quilting gurus out there would no doubt question my methods and find lots of mistakes but I really am delighted with this and I hope Baby J's mum likes it too.

Enjoy your weekend!

Andrea xx

  5. There's no such things as mistakes, I prefer to think of them as learning experiences! You did a great job on your first quilt and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. :)

  7. Welcome to quilt land Andrea! It is so funny how you can for years wanting to make a quilt but being TOTALLY intimidated by the sewing machine and the fear of using it. And then, once you face the fear and give it a go - the outcome is amazing. So quick. So easy. SO fantastic to see colors and patterns blend together to a piece of art. Well done! I think your quilt looks lovely. It is very autumn like with the colors. I am looking forward to see more of this from you. Go Girl! And lucky you having a quilting neighbour. Diary of a Quilter has been my big totor in many ways. Check her out. She has some great tutorials and a quilting school for beginners on her blog. Step by step going through everything from choosing fabric, cutting, piecing, choosing batting, binding etc. Have a wonderful Sunday.

  8. Oh Andrea this is just lovely. I have a sewing machine upstairs that I keep looking at and thinking I must do something . I love hand sewing I find it very soothing, this would be a perfect combination, and one that you could pick up and put down when you felt like it. I would definitely go with the puff. How you can bear to part with is I don't know.

  9. Your quilt is absolutely beautiful! I love the colour combinations and especially the green backing. I haven't been brave enough to tackle a quilt yet (mostly due to lack of sewing machine in the near vicinity) but this is definitely inspiring. Well done! I'm sure Baby J will adore it xxx

  12. Love the quilt - you have way more patience than I do! I just finished my first quilt but all machine sewn except hemming round the edging (which took an age!). I enjoyed the patching, but funnily enough, not the quilting bit so much - not really sure why. I loved the end result though so intend to have another go at some point. Yours looks really lovely and cosy. x

  13. First - yippee and congratulations to me :)

Second - this quilt is gorgeous- and your 'cheat' backing makes me think I could tackle a quilt - its been the thought of binding the edge that is the big fear factor for me - this looks lovely and seems to work really well.

  14. It's beautiful, and the puffiness is perfect. There's something very calming about hand stitching quilting. Using the machine makes it feel like work!
